Is there a fee to access services at New Start?

All of our programs and services are free of charge. 

Do I need a referral to access services at New Start?

All of our programs and services are accessible by self-referral. You can contact us directly at 902-423-4675 or info@newstartcounselling.ca. Referrals will be conducted by phone.

Do you offer virtual appointments?

Yes, we offer appointments by phone, video, or in-person depending on client preference.

Am I eligible for counselling at New Start?

Our counselling program is for individuals who have used harm or violence in their relationships and would like to engage in healthier behaviour.

What is abusive behaviour?

Abusive behaviour may include physical, sexual, emotional, economic or psychological action or threats. For more information about intimate partner violence, please visit the OUR STORY page.

Do you offer couples counselling?

New Start does not offer traditional couples counselling. If both partners have engaged in individual counselling at New Start, there may be an opportunity for “Conjoint” sessions with both partners and both counsellors. If you are interested in Conjoint sessions, please discuss this with your counsellor.

Do you offer counselling for children/youth?

Our counselling program is intended for individuals ages 18+.

What is Fatherhood Matters?

Fatherhood Matters is an umbrella of services for anyone who identifies as a father, father figure or male caregiver You can meet with our Fatherhood Matters team one-on-one to discuss your parenting goals, attend one of our bimonthly Dads groups, or join a program or event hosted by Fatherhood Matters.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Our counselling program is typically 8-12 sessions, depending on the needs of the client. Social work services are available on an “as needed” basis. Participation in Fatherhood Matters is flexible and based on the goals of the client.
