Our Story

At New Start, we believe that change is always possible. No matter where you’ve been or what you’ve experienced, there is hope. There is healing. There is a way forward.

A PLACE WHERE CHANGE BEGINS

The Full Story

For nearly five decades, we have been walking alongside individuals on their journey toward healthier relationships, personal growth, and meaningful transformation. We understand that intimate partner violence is complex, often rooted in pain, past experiences, and patterns that can feel impossible to break. But we also know that change is possible—and that no one is beyond healing.

Through one-on-one counselling, group support, and our Fatherhood Matters program, we empower people to step into a future defined by growth, accountability, and care. We believe in meeting people where they are—with understanding, not shame—and helping them take the steps they need to create lasting change.

Healing is not a solitary journey. It happens in connection—with ourselves, with those we love, and with a community that believes in our capacity to do better, to be better. At New Start, we walk this journey together.

Because this is where change begins.

Our Journey

New Start began in October 1974 as a project designed to provide a counselling service for men whose partners had to take shelter in Bryony House, the local transition house for women. Ken Belanger, a social worker, was instrumental in bringing forward the value and importance of men involved in violent relationships becoming engaged in a therapeutic journey that would lead to more respectful and healing relationships. Over time, our clinical approach has evolved to embrace Narrative Therapy, inviting individuals to explore what they want in relationships and uncover what has prevented them from achieving the connections they desire.

Now an independent society registered under the Societies Act of the Province of Nova Scotia and a registered charity since 2012, New Start offers a compassionate, non-judgmental space where people can explore, understand, and move toward better ways of being. Our programs provide support for those seeking to take responsibility for past harm, those striving to break free from cycles of unhealthy relationships, and those searching for the tools to build stronger, more loving connections.

Understanding Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

Intimate partner violence (IPV) can happen in any relationship and affects people from all backgrounds. It includes actions that cause physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial harm between current or former partners. This harm may take the form of physical aggression, threats, manipulation, controlling behaviors, or verbal abuse. IPV does not always involve physical violence—many people experience harm in ways that are less visible but just as impactful.

Rather than being just a series of isolated incidents, IPV often occurs within a pattern of behaviors aimed at exerting power or control. These behaviors may develop over time, making it difficult for individuals to recognize what’s happening or to seek help. IPV can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or socioeconomic status, and its impact can be profound, influencing mental health, self-esteem, and personal safety.

At New Start, we understand that IPV is a complex issue often rooted in learned behaviors, past trauma, and societal influences. We believe that change is possible. By addressing the underlying causes, supporting those impacted, and helping individuals build healthier relationships, we work to create safer communities for everyone.
